KAILUA BAY INVASIVE SPECIES REMOVAL TOURNAMENT 

October 4, 2026


TOURNAMENT RULES and REGULATIONS:

  1. Location-  Start and finish at Kailua Beach Park Boat Ramp.

  2. Timing-

    1. 7:00am Mandatory check in

    2. 7:30am Safety meeting

    3. 8:00am Start

    4. 12:00-12:30pm Mandatory check-out & fish count

    5. 12:30pm Lunch, fish count & awards

    6. 1:30pm Jan ken po and pau

  3. Use of Paddle Craft Mandatory (no motorized crafts): All entrants must use a paddle craft of their choosing to reach their fishing grounds (wa’a, surfski, paddleboard, kayak or row boat of any kind).  This is a bring your own gear event.

  4. Target Fish- only Ta’ape, To’au and Roi will be counted.

  5. Fishing Methods-  Harvest is by hook and line or spearfish only (no nets).

  6. Teams- 2 person teams only (exception: family teams [mom, dad, and keiki 16 and under] can have more). No solo mission.

  7. Fishing Boundaries- Mokapu point- Wailea point. The makai boundary is up to you and your ability.  When in doubt, no go too far out. 

  8. Registration- Number of entries is capped at 50 teams.  No late entries.  Online registration only via the Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association website (Kanakaikaika.com).  

  9. Entry Fee- $40 entry fee/team +ACA insurance fee ($10/person unless you are an ACA member already).  Includes: prizes and giveaways; 2 lunches (plus participating keiki lunches if applicable); a bonus prize for the post awards jun ken po (see Awards).

  10. Awards- Tournament winners will be ranked by the number of fish caught, (not by weight).  The team with the most fish caught will be ranked #1, the second most ranked #2, and so on.   The top three ranking hook-and-line teams and the top three ranking spearfish teams will be awarded merchandise/gift card prizes.  Other prizes will be awarded  to teams by random pick from the calabash.   After all awards are completed, a final prize will be awarded to the individual winner of a group jun ken po.  Prizes to be revealed via periodic posts in the weeks prior to the Tournament.

  11. Check-in and Check-out is mandatory- All participants must check in at the Kailua Boat Ramp official tent between 7:00-7:30AM.  AND all participants must check-in their catch and check-out their Team at the Kailua Boat Ramp official tent NO LATER THAN 12:30pm.

  1.       Late teams will not be eligible for tournament prizes. 

If no calls, texts or radio communications are received from a missing team by 12:30 PM, emergency procedures to locate you will be initiated!

  1. Youth Participants: Anyone under 18 MUST HAVE PARENTAL CONSENT.

  2.  Government Regs- All entrants shall abide by all Federal and State of Hawaii fishing regulations.

  3.  Pilau I’a- A fish will be disqualified if it is spoiled, or has been mutilated or bitten by a shark.  Take care your catch.

  4.  Tie Breaker- In the event of an identical fish count, ranking will be determined by team check-out time.  The team with the earlier check-out time shall be awarded the higher ranking.

  5.   Fish Count- The Tournament fish Count Master is the official timekeeper and will determine closing time of the fish count.  If the entrant is not checked out and in line by 12:30pm, as determined by the Count Master, the Team’s fish will not qualify.

  6.  Hakaka- Any disputes shall immediately be brought to the attention of the Tournament Chairperson(s) or official tent prior to the closing of the Fish Count.  A final decision shall be made by a committee that shall include the Tournament Chairperson(s), the Count Master, and the Manuiwa Executive Director.  

  7.  Unknowns- In case of Natural Disaster or other State emergency (including hurricane, tropical Storm, tsunami, extreme surf), the Tournament committee may cancel and reschedule the tournament to a later date.  There will be NO REFUNDS.

  8. Must be Present to Win:  At least one Team member must be present to (a) weigh in their catch and (b) receive winnings when the awards are presented for each category.

  9.  Dive Specific Rules:

  • Dive floats required

  • 1 up 1 down

  • 1 float per team

  • No belt kui (float kui only)
